The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) screening system at six undisclosed land ports of entry. Known as the Travel Compliance Indicator (TCI), this tool is designed to enhance border security while streamlining the entry process for travelers.
What Is the Travel Compliance Indicator?
The TCI is an AI-based predictive model that generates a compliance score for each traveler. It analyzes real-time data using five years of CBSA records, including:
- Travel history
- Type of identification presented
- Vehicle details
- Entry patterns and risk indicators
The system does not replace human officers. Instead, it supports decision-making by flagging travelers who may require additional screening. Final decisions remain with CBSA personnel.
Impact on Travelers
- Low-risk travelers may experience faster processing and fewer delays.
- Unusual travel patterns (e.g., frequent trips in different vehicles) may trigger secondary inspections.
- The system aims to reduce false positives, which previously led to unnecessary delays.
Expansion Plans
- The Canadian government has invested over CAD 15 million in the TCI initiative.
- Full rollout to all land ports is expected by late 2027, with future expansion to airports and seaports.
