The government has extended the deadline for applicants under the temporary resident to permanent resident pathway to apply for an open work permit until December 31, 2026.
For those who are still waiting for a decision on their permanent resident application submitted in 2021 under the temporary resident to permanent resident pathway, this extension allows them to
- keep their temporary resident status in Canada; and
- continue working in any occupation and for any employer while your application is being processed.
This extension only applies to eligible applicants and their family members.
The temporary resident to permanent resident pathway, which closed on November 5, 2021, was a limited-time pathway to permanent resident. It was for certain temporary residents who were then working in Canada and their families.
