The Brazilian government has extended the deadline for obtaining or registering for a residence permit, and for registering for a temporary visa, for foreign nationals with immigration documents that expired from March 16, 2020. The deadline is extended until March 15, 2022. This ordinance will come into effect on September 15, 2022.
What to Expect
- There will not be penalties for the delay in registration or extended stay during this period.
- The extension applies to immigrants and visitors who are applying for a residence permit but have not been able to schedule the required appointments due to local restrictions.
- Passports and other personally identifying documents issued abroad which have expired since March 16, 2020 will be accepted, so long as the applicant has remained in Brazil and seeks to become regularized by March 15, 2022.
