Australia’s Permanent Migration Program for 2025-2026: Stability and Skilled Focus Continue

The Australian Government has confirmed that the Permanent Migration Program for 2025-2026 will remain steady at 185,000 places, mirroring the planning level set for 2024-2025. This decision follows extensive consultation with state and territory governments, which collectively recommended maintaining both the size and composition of the program, with a continued emphasis on skilled migration.

The program’s structure remains anchored in three key streams:
  • Skill Stream: Comprising approximately 71% of the total program (132,200 places), this stream targets individuals with qualifications and experience critical to Australia’s economic needs. Key visa categories include Employer Sponsored, Skilled Independent, Regional, and State/Territory Nominated visas.
  • Family Stream: Allocated 52,500 places, this stream facilitates the reunification of Australian citizens and permanent residents with close family members, including partners, parents, and children.
  • Special Eligibility Stream: Reserved for unique cases such as returning residents and certain former Australian Defence Force personnel, with 300 places allocated.

The Department of Home Affairs has already aligned visa processing with these planning levels, ensuring continuity and minimal disruption to applicants and stakeholders.

For migration professionals, employers, and sponsoring entities, this consistency offers predictability and strategic clarity. The sustained focus on skilled migration – particularly through employer-sponsored and state-nominated pathways – signals ongoing demand for talent across key sectors and regions.
