New Restrictions in Place for Travel to Canada

To control the coronavirus’s spread, new public health measures for air and land travelers to Canada will go into effect as of February 22, 2021.

Recent Updates:

  • As of January 7, 2021, all air travelers to Canada 5 years or older (regardless of citizenship or place of residence) must provide evidence of a negative PCR COVID test taken within 72 hours before the flight’s departure.
  • As of January 31, 2021, Canada suspended flights to Mexico and the Caribbean until April 30.
  • As of 11:59 pm ET on February 3, all international passenger, private and charter flights, including from the US, are landing only at the Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, and Montreal airports.

For land border crossings:

  • As of February 15, 2021, travelers are required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test taken in the US within 72 hours of crossing or proof of a positive test result within 14-90 days of arrival.
  • As of 11:59 pm ET on February 21, 2021, all travelers, whether arriving by air or land, will be required to submit their travel and contact information, including a suitable quarantine plan, electronically via the ArriveCAN app. They must also continue to submit COVID-related information electronically daily throughout the quarantine period.
  • As of February 22, 2021, travelers will also be required to take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival and toward the end of their 14-day quarantine.

There is currently no mandatory hotel stay for those entering Canada by land.

For air travelers:

  • All arriving international passengers (including from the US) will undergo mandatory PCR testing upon landing (in addition to the test they need to show before boarding) and another test toward the end of their quarantine period.
    • This particular measure (test only) has been rolled out sooner at Toronto Pearson airport, where the Ontario government made it mandatory as of noon ET on February 1, 2021.
  • In advance of boarding, each traveler will be required to reserve a room at a Government-approved hotel in one of the 4 hub cities for 2-3 days until the test results are known. This will be at the traveler’s expense and could cost upwards of CAD$2,000. Approved hotel booking information is available here.
  • Once negative results are received, the traveler can then continue to their final destination to wait out the remainder of their 14-day quarantine. A further test during this period will also be required.
  • If results are positive, the traveler will be given further instructions and will be required to relocate to a designated quarantine facility or other approved place of quarantine.
