Malaysia Extends 1:3 Internship Policy Pilot to March 31, 2026

On January 21, 2026, the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) of the Immigration Department of Malaysia announced that the pilot phase of the 1:3 Internship Policy, originally scheduled to conclude on December 31, 2025, has been extended until March 31, 2026.

The 1:3 Internship Policy, which was announced by the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) on January 15, 2025 as part of Malaysia’s broader efforts to build a future-ready, skills-based talent ecosystem and to strengthen industry participation in developing local talent, links expatriate hiring to local talent development by requiring employers to offer three structured and paid internship placements under the National Structured Internship Programme (MySIP) for every one expatriate hired.

This extension is intended to provide employers with additional time to familiarize themselves with the policy, plan internship requirements and placements, and onboard the MyNext platform.

During the extended pilot period, TalentCorp will continue to engage closely with employers, offering guidance, clarification, and hands-on support to facilitate effective and quality implementation that benefits both organizations and interns.

Employers are encouraged to utilize this period to strengthen structured internship pathways and enhance industry-education linkages.
