UK ETA Scheme Updates

The ETA scheme was initially introduced so overseas nationals who do not typically require a visa to enter the UK (and do not hold any other UK immigration status) could obtain prior authorization/clearance to travel to the UK.

This scheme originally applied to nationals of Bahrain, Jordan (removed on September 10), Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

What’s next:

  • The UK is now set to extend the ETA scheme to additional overseas nationals entering the UK from January 8, 2025.

  • This will apply to many non-EU nationals, including Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and US nationals, amongst others.

  • This cohort can apply for an ETA from November 27, 2024.

The ETA scheme will then extend to wider EU/EEA and Swiss nationals from April 2, 2025. These nationals can apply for their ETA from March 5, 2025.

An ETA will cost GBP 10 and will allow multiple entries to the UK over 2 years, providing each stay is no longer than 6 months in duration.

Why it matters: With the introduction of this scheme, the UK government believes it will present a deeper understanding of those travelling to the UK and develop the ability to assess individuals in advance and potentially restrict the travel of those who may pose a risk to the UK.

Good to know:

  • Nationals who are required to obtain an ETA but do not have one when they travel to the UK, can be refused entry.

  • Those who already hold a UK visa and/or permission to reside in the UK for work/study will not require an ETA.

  • The ETA scheme does not apply to Irish or British nationals.

  • Nationals from Jordan were removed from the ETA scheme as of September 10, 2024, which means they will now need to apply for a formal visa to enter the UK.
