UK Home Secretary Resigns Amid Immigration Scandal

May 1, 2018

On Sunday, April 29, Amber Rudd resigned as the UK’s home secretary following accusations of having lied to Parliament regarding the potential deportation of illegal immigrants. In a private letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, Rudd had outlined her commitment to increasing deportations by ten percent, while publicly denying that any deportation quotas or targets had been established. UK lawmakers thereafter pressured May to answer for the “hostile environment” that this has created for immigrants in Britain. In Rudd’s place will be Sajid Javid, the son of a Pakistani immigrant family and the first ethnic minority to hold this position. Javid is expected to present a more immigrant-friendly face for the current administration.
