EIG COVID-19 Update | November 2, 2020

International Updates

Italy | Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte spoke to parliament urging stricter restrictions to avoid a nationwide lockdown. Currently, food establishments must close by 6 PM, shops are closed, and masks must be worn in public spaces. Additional restrictions are expected by the end of the week.

Portugal | On Saturday, the government announced new lockdown restrictions to begin on Wednesday, November 4. People are being told to stay at home other than for essential outings, and companies are encouraged to do remote work.

Thailand | The Thai Cabinet officially extended the State Emergency Decree for one more month until November 30, 2020. However, the Ministry of Interior did not agree to extend the special automated visa extension for foreigners in Thailand (amnesty visa).  This amnesty visa ended on October 31, 2020.  If applying for a visa extension after October 31, 2020, foreigners must pay a penalty fee for overstaying according to the number of days of non-compliance after October 31 until the visa extension can be properly made with the Immigration Authority.  This visa extension must be filed within 90 days; beyond 90 days will be considered intentionally committing an overstay and will be subject to regulations under the law, which could result in deportation or being banned from future entry.

The United Kingdom | Over the weekend, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a month-long nationwide lockdown, to begin on Thursday, November 5, and end as early as December 2. Pubs, restaurants, gyms, and nonessential businesses will all close. Schools, colleges, and universities will remain open. The furlough system of paying 80% of employee wages will continue through November.
